Not only do we residents of Woodberry Down have the benefit of an artfully landscaped estate with water features, just over the road is the impressive Finsbury Park.
My special interest in the park lies in the Athletics Track situated beside the lake at the highest point of the park. I took up athletics aged 58 just 13 years ago and this is by way of invitation for you to give it a go too.
The club based at the track is London Heathside, which has enormous success with its running section, with many very good marathon runners and successful cross country teams for athletes of all ages.
But this invitation is aimed mainly at Masters athletes, anyone aged over 35, once known as Veterans, to take part in Track and Field.
This note contains two invitations:
1. to come to our preparatory evening at the track on April 28th
2. to take part in the Vets League this season
Introductory Session
By way of encouragement for you to take part there will be an opportunity to meet up with other vets and get used to the idea of track and field, if you are not already familiar.
On Thursday 28th April at 7:15 at Finsbury Park Track we will be holding an introductory session featuring:
Race Walking
A Sprint
Javelin and
Hammer
Race Walking features in the first match. Our goal will be to introduce you to the event to a sufficiently high standard not to be disqualified.
Please do come along on 28th at 7:15 and ask for Adrian or Israel or get in touch with me first omotng@gmail.com / 07970705411
Vets' League
Heathside’s Veterans have had a good indoor season, collecting 4 British Age Group Championships, 5 Runners’ Ups places and a silver and a bronze at the Europeans.
A promising prelude to the outdoor season, which, for the club, competition begins with a Vets League match On May 9th at Lee Valley.
This is a Monday evening with the first event starting at 6:30.
Match 2 is on Monday 20th June at Stevenage SG2 9PB
Match 3 is on Monday 18th July at Lee Valley N9 0AR
and
Match 4 on Monday 8th August at Harrow HA3 6SW
If you would like to take part in any or all of these matches please let Ivan Ross know for the men (ivan.roots.ross@gmail.com), and Mary Kehoe
for the women (helenekehoe@gmail.com) as they must submit a team sheet in advance.
Because the event takes place in the evening, time is limited and not all events can take place in every match. The full grid showing times, events and age groups is at the foot of the page.
Obviously, we’d like to do well in these matches, but mainly we want to enjoy them. The matches are relatively low key affairs, which provide the opportunity to participate alongside others in your peer group.
It’s an opportunity to step outside your comfort zone, perhaps. Take a further look at Race Walking for instance. This features in the first Vets Match of every season but Heathside is rarely represented. This 5 minute
video provides a good explanation
Yes, race walking is an Olympic sport. Here’s how it works.
