The WDCO board has received an email from Philip Glanville, the directly elected Mayor of Hackney, stating that he is taking a leave of absence.

As Glanville is also the Cabinet member for the Woodberry Down Regeneration, this leave may be significant for Woodberry Down.

The arrangements taking immediate effect at Woodberry Down to replace Glanville are set out in his email, which is reproduced below.

The news is also presented on the Hackney website, where it is stated that "Statutory Deputy Mayor of Hackney, Cllr Anntoinette Bramble, will assume temporary leadership of the Council . . . . "

The reasons for the leave of absence have been widely reported by news outlets. This, for example, from the Hackney Gazette.

Glanville's email to WDCO and the development partners

Dear WDCO and Partners,

I am writing to let you know about arrangements for supporting Woodberry Down from Hackney Council as we move forward and I temporarily take a leave of absence as Mayor of Hackney and by association Cabinet Member for Woodberry Down. As you know it is the latter role that I have held the longest, since 2014, and so it is with great sadness that I am sending you this email, but it is the right thing to do for Hackney and this important work and partnership.

From yesterday evening, my Deputy Mayor, Councillor Guy Nicholson, will be leading on Woodberry Down. Councillor Nicholson is our cabinet member for planning and regeneration (which includes our in house housing programme), and as such is well placed to lead the strategic, technical and political aspects of the project. As my colleague on Hackney Council and a cabinet member for longer than I have been either Mayor or Councillor, Councillor Nicholson is well-placed to help guide Woodberry Down forward for the time being. He will also be ably supported by Acting Mayor, Deputy Mayor Bramble and your ward councillors.

It has been an honour to work with you all at Woodberry Down and especially WDCO. This project has touched my life for over a decade and it is the place so many of you call home. Everyone here is aware we are at a sensitive time for this vital project, and that is why we are putting in place a clarity of leadership straight away.

I look forward to witnessing the continued success of Woodberry Down and know that Councillor Nicholson will be as appreciative as I have been of participation from WDCO and will want to quickly get to know you all and the wider partnership.

The council's officer and political leadership remains utterly committed to Woodberry Down as you will see in the days and weeks ahead, and hopefully at some point I will be back working with you again.

Best wishes,

Phil
