Woodberry Down moves to Haringey

Well, sort of. The London Borough boundaries are not being redefined but the parliamentary constituencies are, and the Boundary Commission’s (BC) latest proposals are very nearly cast in stone.

There is still a consultation going on (until December 5th), but it is very clear that this is the final stage of an already long process, and the BC makes it clear that very strong evidence would be needed to make further changes now.

So Woodberry Down will move from Hackney North and Stoke Newington to Tottenham Borough.

The image below overlays the old constituency (in colour at the bottom outlined in pink) with the proposed new constituency (black and white, at the top, outlined in blue). The overlap is just Woodberry Down and Brownswood wards.

This doesn’t immediately strike one as being a good idea. The current constituency looks quite sensible:

  • It is all within one borough (Hackney)
  • It is bounded quite clearly
    • To the East by the River Lea
    • To the North by Haringey
    • To the west by Islington
    • To the south by Hackney South

The proposal detracts from much of this by crossing the borough boundary with Haringey.

If you would like to read more the BC consultation paper is here

You can find previous consultations here though you will need to filter for London and Hackney North.

This particular response claims to be on behalf of the local authority, though why, if it is, is the respondent’s name redacted?
